Neuron Raises Awareness of ‘Dooring’ During Road Safety Week

We are also demonstrating how simple actions from drivers, as well as riders can help make the streets safer for everyone

This Road Safety Week (12–18 May), Neuron is partnering with our safety partners, including the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF), to raise awareness of a major hazard for riders—“dooring.” This occurs when a car door is suddenly opened into a rider’s path, which can lead to serious accidents.

Research reveals that in some of the countries where we operate, nearly 60% of cyclists have experienced a car door opening in their path, and 35% of drivers admit they don’t always check before opening their doors. These preventable incidents highlight the importance of simple actions, like drivers checking mirrors and blind spots, to ensure everyone’s safety.

Our latest findings in Australia also show our riders’ top safety concerns:

  • 44% worry about cars suddenly opening doors

  • 36% are anxious about cars overtaking too fast or closely

  • 35% fear potholes and poor road surfaces

Simple actions—like drivers checking before opening a car door, giving riders space when overtaking, and avoiding sudden movements—can prevent life-changing accidents. Riders also have a role to play: wearing helmets, staying visible, riding predictably and giving cars plenty of space can all help reduce the risk of incidents.

The campaign will run throughout Road Safety Week, featuring educational materials, rider and driver awareness campaigns on social media, and community engagement initiatives. For more information on safe riding and responsible driving, visit www.ScootSafe.com or follow the campaign on social media.

Top tips for e-scooter riders
  • Stay Visible – Wear bright gear and use lights, especially at night. Neuron’s ‘safety orange’ e-scooters are designed to stand out to other road users, but do your part as well.
  • Follow the Rules, Wear a Helmet – Stick to the road rules, use bike lanes whenever possible, and remember a helmet is your best defence against serious injury.
  • Be Predictable and Extra Wary of Motor Vehicles – Ride with confidence, but avoid sudden swerves, and always keep a door-width distance from parked vehicles.
